How Does Stem Cell Therapy Help With Bad Knees?

Stem Cell Therapy for Knees

Greetings once again from your friends at Bay Colony Chiropractic serving all of Galveston County, Texas and the surrounding area.  We produce podcasts and blogs as a public service to educate the general public about how and why Americans increasingly include chiropractic care in their pain management plan.  Today’s blog post addresses knee pain and how stem cell therapy may be your non-surgical solution to pain-free knees.

We invite you to listen and read along with Dr. Sanders as today she discusses stem cell therapy as an option to knee surgery.

Narrator:   Welcome to the “Regenerative Wellness Podcast with Dr. Sanders”.  I’m Darren Kincaid along with Dr. Donna Sanders from Bay Colony Chiropractic here in Dickinson, Texas.  Dr. Sanders has been practicing chiropractic care for over 30 years staying on the forefront of the most comprehensive and advanced chiropractic care techniques available today. This podcast is dedicated to educating the people of Galveston County and the surrounding area on how to live younger, stronger, and better lives. The topic of today’s podcast is: “Can Stem Cell Therapy Help with Knee Problems or Injuries?”?

Well alright, Dr Sanders.  Over the last couple of episodes, we've learned what stem cells are and how they can benefit the healing process.  Now, I think it's time to get into the types of injuries or maladies stem cell therapy can actually help with.  How about we talk today about knees. What kinds of knee issues can stem cell therapy help with?

Dr. Sanders: Darren, stem cells can help with all the knee issues to be honest with you. But let’s just break it down. In any injury, your either going to have acute problems or chronic problems. Acute meaning it’s fresh.  You just fell, you injured yourself, you had some kind of accident. Now everything is inflamed, maybe torn.

So in the case of the knee where you can tear the ligament, tendons, or the meniscus, all sort of things can happen. Your going to have inflammation and/or torn tissue. Stem cells are going to go in there first and their going to reduce the inflammation.  That’s one of their primary goals. They go to that area, they release molecules that reduce the inflammation which has the tremendous benefit of relieving pain. The sooner the stem cells get in there after the injury, they actually decrease the scarring process. You have less scar tissue the faster you get the stem cells in there. And they cause regeneration. If you’ve torn the meniscus, your going to regenerate the part that was torn and your actually going to regenerate the part that you tore, and your actually going to regenerate the ligaments and tendons as well. It’s pretty incredible in helping with acute injuries. We’ll see them get that injection and walk out without pain. It’s not even for pain it’s actually to help heal the injury but that’s a great side effect of it.

Then we have the chronic people. The chronic people slowly hurt their knee over the years. The first thing first, once the stem cells get in there their going to decrease the inflammation then their gong to start regenerating the tissues. We’ve had tremendous luck with both of these types of cases. We recently had an 89 year-old man who could not keep from crawling up on his roof to clean out his gutter and other repairs and he fell off the ladder. He injured his knee and he went to the orthopedist.  He couldn’t walk on it. They did injections. They sent him to physical therapy.  They kept repeating this process and he still was not out of pain. So we educated him about stem cells. Now mind you this is an 89 year-old man.  He came in January and got his knee injected with stem cells and walked out without any pain. He had not had any pain relief at all in that entire time. He got immediate relief from pain. This was April. That was January and he was still in a lot of pain. He was still doing all the things he wants to do like climbing ladders although we tried to talk him out of that. So he is full functioning. He can bend his knee. He can do everything. And then on the other end of the spectrum, we had another gentleman who back in the 70’s hurt his knee and the orthopedist scraped all the cartilage and removed everything out of there. He had five surgeries on that knee. I could actually see bone on bone with arthritic spurs everywhere.  We injected him and he was out of pain immediately. We had to do physical therapy to help regenerate the functions of his muscles. We x-ray’d him last week after a couple of months and actually now has space between those bones. So he is actually regenerating the cartilage between the bones and getting more fluid in there so he can move that knee again out of pain. So he’s doing tremendously well. I could go on forever. From one end to the other we are witnessing tremendous results. No doubt about it.

Narrator: Well that’s very interesting.  I’ve heard that stem cell therapy only works if you have some cartilage to work with. You have to have something there to work with. So you are saying that even if you are almost totally arthritic and you have virtually no cartilage whatsoever, stem cell therapy can still be effective?

Dr. Sanders: Yes, that man had no signs of cartilage between his bones at all.  We have another patient, her knee has gotten so bad, again, an older lady, active, constantly laying bricks, and building patios in the back yard.  Planting, digging things up, a master gardener.  Her knee had got so bad that she was actually scheduled for a knee replacement. She even sold her house and moved into an assisted living place so that she would be surrounded by help after the surgery.  Well right after she got into that apartment we did her stem cell therapy literally a week later. She now has zero pain, the regeneration of her cartilage is incredible, and she has cancelled her knee replacement. It’s like she has a brand-new knee. I can’t believe she is 80 years old. It is incredible!

Narrator: Wow, that's amazing, Dr Sanders.  It's so great to hear that there are alternatives to knee surgery or even total knee replacement.
