Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body. The sciatic nerve branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg.

Sciatica (irritation of the sciatic nerve) refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve. Generally, this pain is felt in the lumbar area (lower back, where the spine curves inward toward the abdomen), the buttocks, and behind the thigh. The pain can also radiate to the lower limbs. Sciatica typically affects only one side of the body.

Common symptoms of sciatica include:

  • Pain in the back, buttocks, hip or lower extremities
  • Leg and or foot numbness
  • Pins and needles in the legs and buttocks
  • Burning sensation
  • Muscles weakness

Sciatica can make bending and walking very difficult. Chronic and acute pain disrupt sleep and other everyday activities.

Bulging discs, spinal subluxations, and muscle spasms can all cause unwanted pressure on the sciatic nerve. The cause of the condition needs to be diagnosed in order to properly treat sciatica. Bay Colony Chiropractic can help you diagnose the cause and treat sciatica.
